SLAVIC DINNERS

Flavours of the past

Slavic cuisine is not just about breakfasts. Our ancestors' dinners were just as abundant and full of flavour. Long winter evenings were the time for shared meals, at which families and communities shared bread and stories while enjoying all kinds of drinks.

What did people eat at Slavic dinners?

  • Soups: Thick, nourishing soups such as cabbage soup, mushroom soup or żurek were the basis of many dinners.
  • Meat dishes: Roasts, stews and kaszanka blood sausage – although meat was not eaten every day, it played an important role on holidays and special occasions.
  • Dumplings: Silesian dumplings, kopytka and łazanki – these simple yet filling dishes were very popular.
  • Groats: Buckwheat, millet and barley groats were served with sauces, meat or vegetables.
  • Bread: Bread, flatbreads and kołacz cakes were an essential part of every meal.
